How does the PPI Human Performance LEADERSHIP™ learning experience differ from other “Leadership Training”?

The Performance Improvement world is filled with cliché “quick fixes” for complex problems. We’ve become awash with buzzwords, catchphrases, and “slogans of the day”. Unfortunately, these tend to offer only surface-level lip service in a world (and within organizations) too ‘busy’ to get to the root of the real issues.

In addition, many have also been ‘hood-winked’ by slick salespeople, doing a pretty good job convincing us that a piece of hardware or software (such as an expensive database), or another procedure or checklist can ‘fix’ the people challenge. It can’t.

Human Performance lies at the CORE of all organizational performance. ‘Under the covers’, the performance of people can get very complex. Psychology, physiology, behavioral science, neuroscience…all come into play.

Many practitioners and leaders have over-simplified the “human performance question”, tendering ‘fixes’ to human error and safety using supposed ‘fixes’ such as threats, ‘toolkits’, “lanyard jewelry” or pocket cards, slogans, and posters. If you’ve experienced these, you likely know they have little (if any) sustainable impact.

On the opposite side of the abyss- many academics have attempted to answer the “human performance question” through detailed psychological and behavioral discourse, spoken in jargon only they can understand.

In the middle, many organizations have sought to do what seems like ought to work- more rules and tools (policies, procedures, requirements, and checklists). While proper (correct), coherent, and properly integrated policies and procedures are essential, use of such instruments to address the “human performance question” have often only complicated things. The typical result? Confusion and frustration while errors continue and people keep getting hurt.

As the CORE of all performance, Human Performance is the ‘ultimate frontier’ of leadership and performance improvement.

Fortunately, PPI Human Performance LEADERSHIP™ offers simplicity on the far side of complexity. You will engage in critical thinking and will grow depth of awareness and understanding as you participate; however, the underlying intricacies are ‘built in’.

Furthermore, where other “leadership” courses tend to focus on a specific aspect (or two) of the leadership equation (such as communications, relationship, command and control, diversity, engagement, etc.), PPI Human Performance LEADERSHIP™ is full spectrum.

It begins by building a baseline understanding of HOW to influence (this is HUGE). It includes a simple model, which when grasped and used, affords you the ability to get another human being to do virtually anything you want them to do. (AND- it works across all generations.)

The Course then moves into HOW to overcome “victim” sensibilities- for yourself and your team members as we develop the cultural concept of Proactive Accountability®.

Once context, mindset, attitude, and motivation are properly understood, Human Performance LEADERSHIP™ lays a foundation for reducing human error.

This is where you’re given simple strategies and tools for directly improving your (4) performance imperatives- Reliability, Efficiency, Productivity, and Safety (REPS).

In addition to understanding some of the science and underlying psychology of human error, you will be introduced to simple Behavioral Defense tools. We call ‘em Error Elimination Tools™. These are the same tools developed and used within the US commercial airline and nuclear generation industries with outstanding success.

If you’ve previously interfaced with Human Performance Improvement (HPI) efforts, been exposed to Human Performance ‘toolkits’ or Technology (HPT), or consider High Reliability Organization (HRO) precepts and fundamentals, you’ve likely been exposed to these Tools.

The evidence is in- these ‘tools’ work…WHEN team members use them. This is where Human Performance LEADERSHIP™ departs from typical “Human Performance” or “Leadership” training. It gives you a simple answer (and solution) to this question: “How do you get a team member (at any level) to do the right thing when no one is watching?”

The answer to that question is simple. When you, me, or anyone else is making a choice, taking an action, or doing something in a specific way when no one is watching, the only way we’re going to do the right thing in the right way is- if we WANT to.

The PPI Human Performance LEADERSHIP™ Course provides you, as a participant, with necessary faculties and skills of influence needed to get team members (at all levels) to WANT to do right things in the right way for the right reasons.

As the Course continues, we then move into organizational alignment.

The Principle-Based Engagement™ / Principle-Based Mentoring™ portions of the Course arm you with a specific HOW-TO recipe for aligning thoughts, feelings and behaviors to grow a culture of One Team with One Goal having One Conversation. This is a day-to-day method for developing and nurturing positive relationships (in all directions) while re-aligning team/organizational culture. This approach blows old-school “observation and coaching” models out of the water!

How long does it take to complete the learning experience?

There are (3) venues for participation in Human Performance LEADERSHIP™.

1.Human Performance Summit (18 PDH)

PPI currently conducts the Human Performance Summit twice per year, typically in April and October, in Raleigh, North Carolina. As part of the Summit, the Human Performance LEADERSHIP™ Course is taught at the ‘graduate level’ as part of the 4-day Next-Gen Human Performance Leadership (HPI) MasterClass.

The PPI Next-Gen Human Performance Leadership (HPI) MasterClass is recommended for those seeking to become Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in Human Performance and Next-Gen Performance Improvement.

Days 2-4 of the MasterClass are personally taught by Tim Autrey. Participants in this fun and engaging learning experience walk away with an understanding of human behavior, human motivation, and influence commensurate with a 6-year college education. Most importantly, it’s taught from a practical HOW-TO context (vice textbook theory and postulation).

Participants in the Next-Gen Human Performance Leadership (HPI) MasterClass also get to experience the Code of Honor development/facilitation process (not included in the 2-day public version cited below).

  1. Public Human Performance LEADERSHIP™Course.

PPI periodically offers the Human Performance LEADERSHIP™ Course in public venues around the globe. In this setting, the Course lasts for (2) full days.

  1. PPI Client Implementation

PPI assists in Client implementation of the Next-Gen approach to Performance Improvement. During implementation, Human Performance LEADERSHIP™ Training is typically conducted onsite.

All implementation services provided by PPI are custom-coordinated to maximize Client Return-On-Investment (ROI).

Based upon the identified [best] implementation model, Human Performance LEADERSHIP™ (including Leadership Team Code of Honor development) runs between 1.5 and 2.5 days.

The 1.5-day version combines onsite classroom training with the online Human Performance BASIC Training iLearning™ Course.


Who should attend Human Performance LEADERSHIP™ ?

For maximum impact, an organization’s entire leadership team should complete Human performance LEADERSHIP™ prior to the remaining members of the team. Where appropriate, the Executive Team should be the first through the learning experience.

The “entire leadership team” includes frontline supervisors and above. Yes-  business owners (for smaller businesses), members of the C-Suite, senior leadership, mid-level managers, and frontline supervisors/foremen.

We also recommend inclusion of organization “key influencers” that might not typically be thought of as part of the “leadership”-  those team members who may not have a ‘leadership title’, yet who have a high level of influence over the mindset and perspectives of others.

In Bargaining Unit organizations, we recommend Union Stewards attend Human Performance LEADERSHIP™.


Why is it called a “learning experience”?

The session is very interactive. Rather than just listening and taking notes, you will have an ‘experience’. An experience heralded by a large percentage as, “the best ‘training’ they’ve ever had,” and by many as- life-changing.

Are there Professional Development Hours (PDHs) available for completion of Human Performance LEADERSHIP™ Training?


Upon successful completion of the training, you can request and receive up to (12) PDH (depending upon the scheduling of your Course), awarded by the Human Performance Association (24 PDH for the MasterClass).

Onsite implementation costs vary based upon your implementation plan.
