The overriding intent of the Practicing Perfection® approach is to transform the culture of your organization; to move your culture from one of mere “compliance” to that of discretionary effort.  In the discretionary effort mode, team members are doing the right things in the right way because they WANT to.

There are specific training courses used within the Practicing Perfection® Implementation Model.  Each of these sessions is designed to reach inside of the participants-  to help them “think different”, and more importantly to “feel different” about their work and the importance of their individual and collective roles in the reliability, safety, efficiency, and (ultimately) the success of the organizational effort.

These Courses, which are described below, are integral to the Practicing Perfection® Implementation Model.  For an overview of the Implementation Model, click here.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING

There are two predominant schools of thought regarding HOW to implement the type of organizational change required to generate substantial performance improvement.

One school is “top-down”.  This requires consistent regimented management and/or charismatic leadership (generally along with structured policies, procedures, checklists, etc.) in order to drive desired behaviors.

The other is “bottom-up”, which seeks to grow participation and collective behavior change at the front-line, ultimately to have it proliferate in all directions throughout the organization.

The truth is, in order to achieve substantial and sustainable improvements in human performance…you need both.

Practicing Perfection® Leadership Training provide organization leadership team members (front line supervisors and above) with the strategic and tactical insights and tools needed to achieve and sustain Next-Level Human Performance.

In the implementation scheme, Leadership Training precedes Mastery Training (see below).

In this two-day training session, leadership team members:

  • Gain a new understanding of the importance of their roles and opportunities relative to human performance
  • Learn the difference between “values” and “principles”
  • Develop a new paradigm of “management” and “leadership”
  • Learn the psychology of influence
  • Learn how to move the organization from mere compliance to discretionary effort
  • Develop a Leadership Team Code of Honor™
  • Grasp a proactive understanding of the psychology of human error
  • Learn how to engage based upon Core Principles
  • Learn the Principle-Based Mentoring™ model, the revolutionary approach to observation/coaching
  • Are given a practical and effective framework for changing the culture of the organization

NOTE:  It is fundamentally important that front line supervisors (FLS) be considered as members of the Leadership Team within the Practicing Perfection® approach.  The FLS is the individual who has the greatest impact on how work is actually performed on a day-to-day basis, and is the linchpin to culture change.

MASTERY TRAINING

Mastery Training is typically attended by all members of an organization, including those who have already attended Leadership Training.

With the Leadership Training sessions completed (establishing role models and mentors of like-mind and priority), Mastery Training then unleashes the insights and promotes the attitudes necessary to initiate positive culture change throughout the organization.

Participants (FLS and below) attend Mastery Training with the other members of their natural work teams.  More senior organization members typically attend a Mastery Training of their choice.

The intent of Mastery Training is to expand the context of organization members, and to get them thinking differently about their roles (and the importance of their roles) in the success of the organization.  During Mastery Training, organization members:

  • Understand the power and potential of personal choice
  • Come to understand the value of the One Team™ approach
  • Internalize Proactive Accountability®
  • Are given tools and insights with which to better understand and relate to others
  • Learn to become leaders within the organization
  • Develop their work team Code of Honor™
  • Understand human error “traps” and “landmines”
  • Fully understand the Error Elimination Tools™ and the expectations for their use
  • Are challenged with the personal choice of where they want to take their own performance, as well as the performance of their team and their organization.

PRINCIPLE-BASED MENTORING™

Studies have shown that, when done correctly, leadership engagement with the front line has a substantially positive impact upon performance.  Unfortunately, in most organizations, even those with defined “Observation and Mentoring Programs”, the people [leaders] doing the observing/mentoring do not know how to do so effectively.  This lack of effective engagement is one of the most common reasons for the failure/decline of performance improvement initiatives.

One of the four fundamental elements of the HU Factor™ is Engagement.  Effective engagement is critical to achieving and sustaining Next-Level Human Performance™.  To be effective, engagement must be positively biased, and must be based upon sound principles.

Principle-Based Mentoring™ (PBM) is a revolutionary process for doing effective observations, including the Core Four™ ‘recipe’ for HOW to engage the workers in a manner that maximizes engagement and promotes ongoing “one team” alignment.

The training process includes a one-day classroom session, followed by either in-field coach-the-coach mentoring or group mentoring for each participant.  The post-classroom mentoring allows participants to experience how pleasantly different the PBM approach is from old-school “coaching” protocols, and to practice engaging with the workers under the guidance of a PPI Master Mentor.

HU BASIC TRAINING™

A substantial challenge for many organizations is the human performance / errors of supplemental workforce members who are tasked with supporting outages, modifications, major maintenance, etc. within organizations

The HU Basic Training™ Course is a half-day course designed to provide supplemental workers with insights, understanding, and expectations that have proven to greatly reduce human error rates.

Specifically, during HU Basic Training™, participants:

  • Understand the power and potential of personal choice
  • Come to understand the value of the One Team™ approach
  • Understand human error “traps” and “landmines”
  • Fully understand the Error Elimination Tools™ and the expectations for their use
  • Are given the opportunity to practice using the Error Elimination Tools™ in a structured environment
  • Are challenged with the personal choice of where they want to take their own performance, as well as the performance of their team

PPC CERTIFICATION

At PPI, we offer Certification Courses that provide the opportunity to earn the professional designation of “PPC” (Practicing Perfection® Certified).

During Certification, Tim Autrey rolls up his shirt sleeves and dives into the depths of Practicing Perfection®. His intent is to provide you, as a participant, with tangible understanding of the underlying complexity (the psychological “triggers”) built into this next-level approach to human performance enhancement.

By gaining this level of awareness, you will understand why the “fast, simple, easy” implementation tactics of Practicing Perfection® are so impactful. By employing these triggers in your area(s) of responsibility, you will greatly multiply your abilities to influence the behaviors of others.
